New Riff Distilling has announced the release of its 2025 Single Malt whiskey, featuring some of the distillery’s oldest malt whiskeys aged up to 10 years. The Kentucky-based producer’s third annual Single Malt release combines three distinct mashbills with innovative finishing techniques.

The 2025 edition represents the culmination of a project that began shortly after the distillery’s founding in 2014. It incorporates whiskey aged between seven and 10 years from three different mashbills, each made with 100% barley varietals.

“Each year, we fine tune our Single Malt whiskey, flexing both our creativity and technical expertise to innovate and explore new dimensions of malt whiskey,” said Master Distiller Brian Sprance.

Complex Blend of Mashbills and Casks

The new release showcases New Riff’s experimentation with different barley types including Maris Otter, Scottish peated barley, and a beer-inspired mashbill based on classic Barleywine. This diversity contributes distinct flavor profiles to the final product.

Further complexity comes from the six different cask types used for maturation: new charred oak, de-charred toasted oak, de-charred and re-charred oak, Madeira casks, Oloroso Sherry casks, and red wine casks.

“After experimenting with different blends, we were especially drawn to the way the Maris Otter, Barleywine and peated whiskies came together, resulting in a layered and complex flavor journey with depth and nuance that we think Single Malt fans will really appreciate,” Sprance explained.

For the first time, New Riff implemented an extended maturation process for their single malt. After creating the initial blend, the whiskey was re-barreled into used oak for additional aging, adding another dimension to its flavor profile.

The distillery’s production process maintains traditional methods throughout. The whiskey was filled into barrels at 110 proof and aged in Northern Kentucky’s climate. Staying true to craft principles, the final product is bottled without chill filtration at 115.2 proof (57.6% ABV).

According to tasting notes, the 2025 release opens with broad oak presence, developing to notes of dark fruit, cacao nibs and citrus on the nose. The palate features deep oak-driven flavors complemented by red and dark fruits, cocoa powder and nutty malt, finishing with zesty, fruity and smokey richness.
