When building a whiskey collection—whether for personal enjoyment or entertaining guests—variety is key. With a budget of $250, you can put together a well-balanced selection of bottles that showcase a range of styles and flavor profiles.
Of course, you could spend the entire budget on nothing but sherry bombs or bourbon if that’s your preference—there’s no wrong way to do it. But this list is designed to offer a diverse lineup that most whiskey drinkers will appreciate. Let’s get started!
Scotch Whiskies
BenRiach 12 Year Old
BUY NOW: $55
BenRiach is a distillery known for its experimental approach, a reputation it continues to uphold today. Its unpeated 12 year old single malt is a beautifully balanced blend of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and ex-port casks.
Masterfully vatted by Rachel Barrie, this single malt takes you on a journey through flavors of cocoa, maple, blackcurrant, and a gentle oak influence from all three cask types. It takes some time to fully open up, but as it interacts with oxygen, its complexity deepens. If you have a spare decanter at home, it’s a great way to showcase this whisky on your bar or in your cabinet—another reason to experience this delicious, classic Speyside expression. It also serves as a gateway to the more experimental side of the distillery.
Glendronach 12 Year Old
BUY NOW: $50
Another distillery led by Dr. Rachel Barrie is Glendronach. Since its acquisition by Brown-Forman in 2016, the brand has sparked much debate—especially following its packaging change a few years ago. However, no matter how you look at it, Glendronach continues to produce a delicious single malt, fully matured in ex-sherry casks.
Sourced entirely from Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry barrels, this whisky is rich with flavors of chocolate, hazelnut, and sweet tobacco.
Ledaig 10 Year Old
BUY NOW: $49
Now, we step into the world of peat! Here we have Ledaig, an expression produced at Tobermory Distillery that still flies under the radar. Even when it receives praise from awards and reviewers, the price rarely seems to rise—thankfully.
This heavily peated single malt from the Isle of Mull immerses you in the smoky world of West Coast Scottish whiskies while maintaining a lively character. There’s a gentle sweetness from ex-bourbon and ex-wine cask influences, along with a creamy texture from the barley. A truly wonderful bottle that has never let me down.
If you’re not a fan of peated whiskies, this one might not be for you. But if you’re curious, ask your local retailer if they have an open sample of the 10 year old or anything else from the brand. And if you love smoky, peaty drams but haven’t yet tried Ledaig—get yourself to a shop now!
Kilchoman Machir Bay
BUY NOW: $46
Kilchoman is arguably the most consistent distillery on the Isle of Islay right now. While they have only recently begun releasing age-stated, limited-edition bottles at 16 and 13 years old, their core range remains an outstanding showcase of exceptional spirit with well-balanced cask influences.
The Machir Bay release is primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, with a touch of sherry casks filling in the gaps. This results in a bold, turbocharged smokiness—dry and BBQ-like in style, with a subtle medicinal edge. If you’re after something a little sweeter, Kilchoman also offers Sanaig, a sherry-forward expression with a profile reminiscent of Lagavulin, for lack of a better comparison. Like the rest of their range, it remains impressively consistent.
The only area where Kilchoman might appear to “fall short” is in its color—but that’s actually a good thing. All of their whiskies are naturally colored, and the variations between batches provide a brilliant showcase of how color can differ significantly without artificial additives.
Irish Whiskeys
Redbreast 12 Year Old
BUY NOW: $58
No whiskey cabinet is truly complete without a great bottle of Irish whiskey, and Redbreast is a firm favorite among most enthusiasts I’ve spoken to. While many newer and independent distilleries in Ireland are producing whiskies similar to Redbreast, it remains widely regarded as the benchmark for the Single Pot Still style.
On the nose, it offers rich, buttery sweetness, while the palate delivers gentle peppery notes from the unmalted barley, followed by layers of marinated fruit and cream. Redbreast has been a must-have in homes for decades, consistently delivering quality and character. If you’re looking for an Irish crowd-pleaser beyond your standard bottle of Jameson, this is definitely one to consider adding to your shelf.
Green Spot Pot Still Irish Whiskey
BUY NOW: $49
Also produced by the folks at Midleton Distillery in Cork, Green Spot is best seen as the “younger sibling” to the Redbreast series. While its stock is a few years younger than Redbreast 12, it makes up for it with a bold explosion of tropical fruit. Every time I nose this whiskey, I pick up vibrant notes of mango, guava, and papaya, along with drier, crisper white wine aromas that round it out beautifully.
Green Spot comes in at a slightly lower price point than Redbreast, making it a fantastic option—especially as the weather starts to warm up. It carries the sweetness of a bourbon, balanced by the fresh fruit snap typically found in white wine. In fact, some batches of Green Spot have even been finished in ex-white wine casks, so if that’s your thing, they’re definitely worth seeking out.
Bourbon
Michter’s Bourbon
BUY NOW: $39
It’s hard to beat the wonderful simplicity of Michter’s Bourbon—a sweet, smooth, and incredibly sippable whiskey from the heart of Kentucky.
Michter’s is world-renowned for its approachable style of whiskey-making and is rapidly gaining popularity in the UK cocktail scene, as well as among home drinkers. It offers notes of dried fruits and cinnamon, with a more restrained wood influence compared to many other bourbons and American whiskeys. While the oak presence is still there, it doesn’t overwhelm with woody dryness. Instead, Michter’s leans into gentle, earthy sweetness with the occasional hint of licorice.
Beyond being a fantastic sipping whiskey, it also shines in cocktails—making for an exceptional Old Fashioned.
Angel’s Envy Port Finish Bourbon
BUY NOW: $37
Now, back to something a little more classic. Angel’s Envy caused quite a stir when it was first released. Fortunately, it’s now more widely available and no longer commands the eye-watering prices that demand once drove it to.
A classic Kentucky bourbon finished in ex-port casks, it gains a subtle European influence that complements bourbon’s naturally sweet and spicy profile. Founded by Lincoln Henderson—one of the key figures behind Gentleman Jack and Woodford Reserve—the brand carries a name steeped in American whiskey royalty.
Thankfully, the liquid itself lives up to that legacy, exuding as much glamour as its founder’s reputation suggests. On the nose, it leans fruitier, with hints of raspberry and red apple, while the finish delivers a sweet yet drying sensation, setting it apart from other classic Kentucky styles.
One of my favorite details about this bottle is the space to write an ‘opening date’ on the side. It’s not a challenge to see how quickly you can finish it, but rather a thoughtful touch that you won’t find on many other brands.
