Lindores Abbey is known in Scotland as being the birthplace of Scotch Whisky. The actual abbey site hosts the oldest evidence for distilling in Scotland, supported by both archaeological evidence abbey documents. These include a written order for a Friar named John Cor to make “acqua vitae” for King James IV. Before that, the abbey is known to have hosted famous Scottish historical figures such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.  In 2003, Drew McKenzie Smith inherited Lindores Abbey, and in 2016 began to build a whisky distillery onsite, loosely inspired by what was known about the medieval distillery. The bew distillery began to make whisky in 2017 and released its first bottling a few years later.

The Scotch
Lindores Abbey Single Malt MCDXCIV doesn’t have an age statement. However, my experience suggests that this is a younger single malt, between 4-8 years old. However, even though it appears to be a young whisky, it packs some flavors that rival a 15 year single malt. It is a full-bodied whisky that is soft and elegant with a nice balance of flavors. Lindores Abbey Single Malt MCDXCIV is matured in ex-bourbon and sherry wine casks and is bottled at 46% ABV.

Color: Clear Gold

The nose begins with a strong fruity aroma. Citrus fruits and lemon zest attack the nose followed by notes of green apple, banana, vanilla, cereal, and some floral characteristics. The palate is rather creamy with similar notes of ripe citrus fruits, vanilla, oats, and cracked pepper. The finish is medium in length with notes of dried fruits, apples, and vanilla. However, the pepper lingers on and on.

The Price
Lindores Abbey Single Malt MCDXCIV can be found for $50 USD.
